The ever-charming Paul Rudd leads an ex! cellent cast in the formulaic comedy Our Idiot Brother.! Naive a nd trusting Ned (Rudd), released from prison after selling pot to a uniformed policeman, is haplessly thrown upon the kindness of his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, and Zooey Deschanel). Naturally, Hollywood protocol dictates that each of them is messed up in their own special way, that they resent Ned's return to their lives, and that each of them learns something from Ned's open heart. Fortunately, the cast gives what could be an exercise in standard plot mechanics some genuine warmth; while the overall architecture of the movie is entirely predictable (the ending feels particularly flat), individual scenes flicker and glow with life and charm. Supporting roles are played by a pretty substantial crew, including Steve Coogan (The Trip), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation), Adam Scott (Party Down), Kathryn Hahn (Crossing Jordan), and T.J. Miller (She's Out of My League). It's a plum performance by Rudd; it's hard to imagin! e another actor who could pull off this kind of sweet, blissful dimwittedness without condescending or mocking.
